St. Augustine on the Walls
Talking to Bishop Ambrose
Augustine was incredibly moved by his encounter with Bishop Ambrose. In this picture we see him talking to Ambrose on the left. In the middle of the picture you can make out two figures each with a halo. The kneeling figure is Augustine's mother, Monica, who has caught up with him and is now living with him in Milan. She is kneeling before Ambrose.
The details on the right side of the picture are hard to make out, but if you look closely you can see Ambrose (with the hat of a bishop) preaching, and Augustine below listening. Initially, Augustine was interested in Ambrose because he wanted to study the Bishop's style as a public speaker, but eventually “the recognition that he was speaking the truth crept in at the same time, though only by slow degrees” (5.14.24). He began to feel that here he could find an answer that could calm his restlessness.
