Villanova community websites

Every member of the Villanova.edu communityused to automatically has a default webspace setup for them but now it must be requested so mostly older faculty have this option. It is not clear how much longer UNIT will support these webspaces. You need GlobalProtect to access it if you are off campus.

2024 saw major changes in access. PC users can use MS Expression Web to edit webpages but must map a network drive to the webspace to navigate your files and select them for editing with that software.

• MS Expression Web is like a combination of Word with Explorer, showing you your folder and file list (empty almost at first) and when you click on an existing webpage like "index.html" you can edit it. You can create new pages etc pretty simply. The web has instructions if you run into trouble, or you can ask bob.
  
• Go to This PC in Windows File Exporer and right click on the ... at the top action bar, whatever it is called, and chose Map Network Drive and paste your version of      \\webdavusers.villanova.edu@SSL\DavWWWRoot\robert.jantzen
  into the window and execute that pop up window. It will require you to sign in with in my case "rjantzen" as my username and then my usual password. This establishes a letter drive on the This PC page that you can open and see your file structure at the web server space. Unfortunately this mapping must be redone when you reboot your computer. A big bummer, but at least it still works.
  
  

You can do a free download of "Microsoft Expression Web" and install it locally so it will remember your website and login information each time you use it.

Mac Users can use another local web editor: DreamWeaver requires a license and can be downloaded through UNIT, once you request access to the Adobe Creative Cloud here.  UNIT advises against using local software to avoid further responsibility for help, but if you use this on a daily basis you want a local installation which automatically remembers your site and (even) login information.

LaTeX

LaTeX is an open source free typesetting software used for all academic publications in mathematics and physics and many other disciplines. It is a typesetting system as opposed to a word processor like Word.

Serious math students learn this software. Math and Computing Sciences Faculty have access to a limited site license through Najib Nadi in Computing Sciences.
